Tourist Arrival and Overnight Stays Increase in Marbella in 2023
The arrival of hotel tourists in Marbella increased in 2023, as did overnight stays, compared to the previous year. However, the figures have not yet surpassed those before the pandemic in 2019, in either of the two indicators. The trend is positive, but those levels have not yet been reached. The average occupancy was similar.
2023: A Good Year for Tourism in Marbella, but Not Record-Breaking
The year 2023 has been good for tourism in Marbella, but it has not been a record-breaking year, as repeatedly stated by the mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, in her promotional message. The data does not lie and is very clear. The municipality had 11% more hotel visitors than in 2022, but it was still 2% less than in 2019.
Pre-Pandemic Levels Not Yet Surpassed
Therefore, the levels before the Covid-19 pandemic, which greatly damaged this sector, have not yet been surpassed. With the data just provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) for the month of December, the whole year can now be completed.
Marbella Welcomed 745,415 Tourists in 2023
In 2023, 745,415 tourists visited Marbella and chose to stay in the municipality’s hotels. This is 74,054 more than in 2022, representing an increase of 11%, confirming a good progression. However, it is 16,046 less than those who arrived in 2019, the year before the health and economic crisis generated by the pandemic. This is 2% less than then, which shows that those figures have not yet been surpassed.
July and August: The Most Important Months for Tourism
The months of July and August, always the most important, had over 95,000 hotel visitors, while the weakest month was December with almost 29,500.
Overnight Stays in 2023
As for overnight stays, 2,752,231 hotel nights were counted in 2023, 1.56% less (43,769) than in 2019, when they reached 2,796,000.
Hotel Occupancy in Marbella in 2023
Last year, Marbella’s hotels had an average occupancy of 65.50%, almost identical to that of 2019, which was 65.59%.
Hotel Rates Skyrocketed in 2023
The rates of the municipality’s hotels skyrocketed in 2023 and reached 301.66 euros in August. Revenue per room also increased and reached 244.54 euros in August.
Average Stay Duration in Marbella
The average stay was 3.58 days, slightly above the pre-pandemic average of 3.53 days.
