Motorhome Parking Regulation in Marbella

A motorhome parked on a street in Marbella has sparked a debate. The governing team of Marbella City Council has dismissed the idea of creating parking areas for motorhomes in the municipality. However, they have committed to creating an ordinance to regulate the parking of these vehicles. The Mobility Councilor has hinted at the preference for other types of tourism models.

Proposal for Motorhome Tourism Regulation

In the council meeting last Friday at Marbella City Council, the Opción Sampedreña (OSP) group proposed a regulation for motorhome tourism in the municipality. The governing team of the Popular Party (PP) only accepted the idea of drafting an ordinance to regulate the parking of these types of vehicles. However, they rejected the option of creating free public parking and promoting private parking areas, as requested by OSP.

Views on Caravaning as a Tourism Phenomenon

The Mobility Councilor, Félix Romero, stated that ‘caravaning’ is a “tourism phenomenon” and raised doubts about whether it is the right model for Marbella. “It is legitimate to ask ourselves what kind of offer we want to promote,” he ambiguously stated, without expressly rejecting motorhomes. The voting made it clear that his party rejects the possibility of creating the parking areas requested by the Sampedreños.

Urban Planning and High-Income Tourists

“In the urban planning that is underway, we have to consider what spaces we want,” he added. From Opción Sampedreña (OSP), councilor Daniel Mahíquez argued not to disregard this type of tourists, as they also have a high income. The councilor said that “it is a sector that we should not overlook” and clarified that “it is not about a hippie’s caravan”. He reminded that these are very expensive vehicles. His proposal was to create public parking areas, where services would be charged, but not parking.

Andalusian Regulation on Motorhome Parking

The Andalusian regulation on this matter establishes parking in two places: campings and motorhome overnight areas. In Marbella, there are several campings in the Las Chapas area, but there is no parking area. There is no regulation on this matter, which has now been approved to be created, while the Traffic and Circulation Ordinance states that a vehicle can only be parked in the same place for 16 consecutive days. It is difficult to control, but if it exceeds that limit, it will be subject to a minor penalty of 50 euros. In addition, the Coast Law prevents parking in areas near the sea.
