San Bernabé Fair and Festivities Kick Off in Marbella
The Feria y Fiestas de San Bernabé commenced in Marbella on Wednesday night, marked by the unveiling of the fairground archway. This year, the archway is dedicated to the local branch of the Protección Civil organisation. The opening speech, known as the ‘pregón’, was delivered by Francisco Javier Vázquez, a local fashion designer and the creative mind behind the F de Frank label.
Coronation of Fair Queens and Kings and Fireworks Display
The night continued with the crowning of the selected fair queens and kings. Spectators gathered on the marina terraces were also treated to a spectacular fireworks display. For those who prefer daytime celebrations, the Feria del Día began on Thursday in La Alameda park and Avenida del Mar. Fair bars have been established by various groups including religious brotherhoods, political parties, and media outlets.
Extended Fairground Hours and Return of Bullfighting
From now until Tuesday 11 June, the day of San Bernabé, the fairground rides will be open from 7pm until 3am. This year’s programme of events also includes a bullfight, marking the first time in nine years. The bullfight, scheduled for Saturday evening, will also serve as the reopening of the renovated Marbella bullring. The lineup of bullfighters includes Morante de la Puebla, José M. Manzanares and Roca Rey.
Controversy Surrounding the Return of Bullfighting
The reintroduction of bullfighting to Marbella has sparked outrage among animal rights activists. An online petition demanding the cancellation of Saturday’s event had garnered nearly 29,000 signatures from around the globe by Thursday afternoon.
Conclusion of San Bernabé Events
The San Bernabé festivities will conclude on Tuesday 11 June, a public holiday in the municipality. The image of the saint will be paraded through the town following a mass at the Encarnación church at 11am. The fair will wrap up with a free concert by the iconic Spanish group Camela in Avenida Ricardo Soriano from 9pm on Tuesday.
