Progress of Salduba Pool Renovation in Marbella
The renovation works of the Salduba municipal pool in Marbella are taking longer than expected, causing inconvenience to both aquatic activity users and athletes. The project, which was supposed to be completed by now according to the initial timeline, is progressing at a slow pace and is only 60% complete.
Mayor’s Visit to the Slow-Paced Renovation Site
Despite the slow progress, Marbella’s Mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, visited the “energy rehabilitation” of the Salduba pool at the Serrano Lima sports complex. She confirmed that the project is 60% complete but failed to mention that it should have been finished by now.
Renovation Timeline and Delays
The renovation began in June 2023 with an estimated completion time of 8 to 10 months. Therefore, the project should be nearly complete by now. However, not only is it not ready, but summer has been announced as the new deadline for its completion.
Contractor and Renovation Details
The renovation was awarded in May last year to the Seville-based company Aguas, Caminos y Puentes S.L. for 2.1 million euros. The renovation will allow the pool to have more depth and host senior competitions, especially water polo, which was not possible before.
Long-Standing Issue and Temporary Solutions
This issue has been ongoing for the 15 years of Ángeles Muñoz’s tenure as mayor, and she has been unable to resolve it. As a result, national water polo teams have had to play their home games at various locations over the years, such as Torre del Mar, Fuengirola, and Algeciras.
Funding for the Renovation
To remodel the Salduba pool, European funds were needed, as the City Council only contributes 20% of the budget. The rest of the money comes from the EDUSI Marbella, Modelo de Ciudad Sostenible strategy, co-financed 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under the Pluriregional Operational Program of Spain 2014-2020.
Impact on the Community
The pool not only serves swimming and water polo athletes but also the users of aquatic activities organized by the City Council for the elderly. All of them have been using the privatized Miraflores facility as best they can during these months.
