New Green Space Unveiled in Estepona
The Estepona town hall has recently unveiled a new green space, named Parque de La Hermandad. This 16,500-square-metre park is situated in Las Mesas, north of Estepona port, nestled between Calle Latvia and Calle Tres Banderas. The park’s name was inspired by the work of the town’s Holy Week brotherhoods, known as hermandad.
Mayor’s Vision for Quality of Life
Estepona’s Mayor, José María García Urbano, expressed that the new green space is a testament to the town hall’s commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its residents by increasing the number of parks and public spaces. The town hall also highlighted that the park has breathed new life into a previously unused plot of land and an old reservoir.
Revitalization of Disused Land
The initial phase of the project involved filling the old reservoir with earth from the excavation of the new Las Mesas reservoir, constructed by Hidralia. This process ensured that the soil did not end up in landfill, further emphasizing the project’s environmental consciousness.
Features of the New Park
The new park boasts green and landscaped areas, sports and children’s areas, and an artificial lake. Native shrubs, perennials, and climbers have been planted across approximately 3,700 square metres, accounting for 32 per cent of the landscaped area. Wooded areas have been strategically designed on the steep east and southeast facing slopes, populated with Mediterranean trees to provide extensive ground cover and prevent surface erosion. The town hall also noted that other species, such as palms, have been planted in the wetter areas of the park.
Artificial Lake as a Highlight
The artificial lake, designed on four levels, is connected by three waterfalls, forming a one-metre waterfall to bridge the approximate four-metre difference in height that runs along its entire length. The lake also features two water features and a water supply at the top to generate a cascade in the different waterfalls, adding to the park’s aesthetic appeal.
