Contemporary Spanish Engraving Museum to Host Series of Lectures on Women in Flamenco

Carmen Díaz and Juan Recio announced this morning that the Contemporary Spanish Engraving Museum in Marbella will host a series of lectures highlighting the role of women in flamenco. The event is organized by the City Council in collaboration with the Sierra Blanca Flamenco Club. The lectures will focus on Aniya La Gitana, Paquera de Jerez, and La Niña de los Peines.

Event Details and Schedule of Flamenco at Marbella

Carmen Díaz, the Director General of Culture in Marbella, explained that the initiative will kick off on Wednesday, January 31, at 7:00 PM, and will continue on February 21 and March 20. The event will feature young female performers who will illustrate the significant figures of this art form through their songs, dances, and guitar performances.

Focus on Flamenco Masters

Díaz added that each of the three performances will promote the understanding of three great flamenco masters through their respective biographies, the teachings they have left behind, and the main styles developed by each of them. Each performance will feature a speaker who will share their knowledge about the different artists, accompanied by a singer and a guitarist, who will interpret the styles and songs of the original author.

Bringing Flamenco Beyond the Club

Díaz emphasized that this is an idea they have been working on for some time, with the aim of taking flamenco beyond the club and doing so in an ideal place like the Contemporary Spanish Engraving Museum. She encouraged citizens to join an activity that “will continue over time as a living cycle of theater”. She also mentioned that admission is free until full capacity is reached.

Marbella’s Commitment to Flamenco

Juan Recio, president of the Flamenco Club, pointed out that “very few cities support flamenco like Marbella does”. He noted that women were traditionally in the background in singing and guitar, and their presence was most allowed in dance. He added that they have chosen the participants in the cycle to be women from Malaga. Regarding the chosen flamenco masters, he indicated that Aniya La Gitana (or Aniya la de Ronda) “was one of the few women who always sang with her guitar”. He said that Paquera de Jerez and La Niña de los Peines were “two great references in flamenco”.
