First Suspected Monkeypox Case Emerges in Costa del Sol
In a recent development, Spain’s Costa del Sol has reported its first suspected case of monkeypox infection. The individual suspected of carrying the infection is a foreign national who is currently in home isolation. The confirmation of the test results is still pending.
Patient Under Home Isolation After Hospital Visit
The patient sought medical attention at the emergency department of the Costa del Sol hospital in Marbella. Following the visit, the individual was instructed to isolate at home. The samples collected for testing were subsequently sent to Madrid for further analysis. The patient had reportedly been travelling in several countries prior to arriving in Spain, none of which are known for a high prevalence of the disease.
Transmission and Symptoms of Monkeypox
Scientists speculate that the disease is likely transmitted through sexual activity, particularly between two men. However, this mode of transmission does not seem to apply to the case in Marbella. The symptoms of this uncommon disease include a unique rash of lesions on the skin, fever, muscle aches, and fatigue.

At present, Spain has confirmed seven cases of the infection, all of which are in Madrid. An additional 29 individuals are awaiting their test results. The Ministry of Health in the Junta of Andalucia confirmed the suspected infection on Friday, May 20.
