Marbella Town Hall Signs Agreement for Hotel Transformation
Marbella’s town hall has entered into a contract with the Junta de Andalucía to convert the Residencia de Tiempo Libre plot into a hotel space. The site, which was inaugurated in 1962 and closed in 2023, was previously used for social purposes, providing affordable accommodation for workers and the elderly. The proposed privatisation of the space for hotel use has sparked significant opposition.
Residencia de Tiempo Libre: From Social Purpose to Hotel Use
Situated in the Las Chapas neighbourhood, eight kilometres from the centre of Marbella, the Residencia de Tiempo Libre originally spanned 21 hectares. Like its six counterparts in Andalucía, it was designed to provide affordable holiday accommodation for working families, pensioners, people with disabilities, and those over 65. The lush tree cover and the traditional architecture of the complex have led to its inclusion in Andalucía’s historical heritage catalogue.
Expansion and Privatisation Plans
Under the new project, the buildable area will be expanded to 30,000 square metres. The land will be offered as a concession to a private entity for a period of 75 years, with a fee ranging between 3.5 and 4 million euros. Carolina España, the regional minister of economy, views this as an example of “good management of public money”.
Opposition to Privatisation Amid Housing Crisis
However, Isabel Pérez, the spokesperson for the socialist party in Marbella, has criticised the privatisation of public services, particularly in light of the current housing crisis – Marbella’s most urgent issue. Pérez has suggested that the Residencia be used for social housing instead.
Residencia de Tiempo Libre: Closure and Future Plans
The Residencia de Tiempo Libre ceased operations in 2023, following the regional government’s decision to close the six complexes in Andalucía. The 321 workers were reassigned to other roles within the region. Some of the government-owned facilities have been sold, while others, like the one in Marbella, are set to be managed by concessions.
