Conservative Party Gains Ground in Andalucia’s Political Landscape
In a significant political shift, the conservative Partido Popular (PP) has made substantial gains in Andalucia’s political landscape. The right-wing party has added almost 900 councillors to its ranks, a significant increase from the 2019 elections. This represents a 26% rise in the number of councillors compared to four years ago.
PP Outperforms PSOE in Votes and Seats
The PP garnered 1,486,396 votes, a substantial increase of over 400,000 from the 2019 elections. In contrast, the PSOE received 1,434,953 votes, a decrease of more than 13,000. The PP has also made gains in all eight of Andalucia’s provinces and has taken over the mayor’s offices in Sevilla, Granada, Almeria, and Huelva, unseating the PSOE incumbents.
PP Retains Mayor’s Offices in Cordoba and Malaga
The PP has also managed to retain the mayor’s offices in Cordoba and Malaga, securing an absolute majority in both cities. Meanwhile, Jaen remains the only main city in Andalucia still governed by the left, which also lost Cadiz.
Voter Turnout in Andalucia Remains Steady
Voter turnout in Andalucia was similar to 2019, with only a slight decrease from 61.41% to 61.34%. In Malaga Province, the PP gained more than 100 new seats, while the PSOE lost over 40 seats.
PP Becomes Most Voted Party in Costa del Sol
The right-wing party now boasts a total of 510 councillors across the Costa del Sol, becoming the most voted party with 308,209 votes, over 50,000 more than in 2019. The PSOE, which was the clear winner four years ago, is now Andalucia’s second party and has lost more than 19,000 votes, obtaining only 194,674.
PP Retains and Gains Mayor’s Offices in Key Cities
The PP will continue to hold the mayor’s offices in Marbella, Estepona, Benahavis, Fuengirola, Nerja, Ronda and will take over from the PSOE in Benalmadena, Mijas, and Torremolinos.
