Real Estate Sector Meets with Marbella City Council Over Security Concerns
The Leading Property Agents of Spain (LPA), a real estate association, has expressed its concerns to the Marbella City Council about the safety of the area due to what they describe as an “increase in home burglaries”. They are calling for an “impeccable image” for the municipality and for the new urban planning to allow for the implementation of more protective measures.
Meeting with Marbella City Council
In a statement, the LPA, which brings together the main real estate agents of the Costa del Sol, reported on the meeting held with the Marbella City Council. They described it as a “training day on security” at the headquarters of the Local Police in Marbella. They indicated that they have shown their “concern about the insecurity generated by the increase in home burglaries in Marbella and the Costa del Sol”.
Crime Rates in Marbella
However, according to the latest crime data from the Ministry of the Interior for the third quarter of 2023, burglaries in homes actually decreased by 4%.
Call for More Security Measures
The promoter of the day, José Carlos León, president of LPA, founder and CEO of Nvoga Marbella Realty, stressed that “Marbella must have an impeccable image that guarantees security to both those who already live in the area and new investors”. He made a significant request for the new urban planning to consider “the possibility of implementing security barriers, guardhouses and cameras at the entrances of private developments”.
City Council’s Response
From the City Council, the Councilor for Citizen Security, José Eduardo Díaz, sent them “a message of tranquility”. “Marbella is a very safe city to live in, with the crime rate decreasing year after year,” he pointed out. “It is true that home burglaries occur, but the general perception of citizens is that Marbella is a peaceful city where you can walk without danger and be at home without risk of being robbed,” he said.
Marbella’s Local Police Force
The head of the Local Police, Javier Martín, pointed out that “Marbella is positioned as the first city in the country to implement a complete video surveillance system, which not only addresses the prevention and resolution of crimes but also serves as a proactive deterrent”. The Local Police of Marbella, as explained to the members of the association, has 495 professionals, including 395 active police officers and 100 watchmen in charge of administrative functions.
