Water Pressure Reduction on Costa del Sol to Combat Drought
In an effort to address the ongoing drought, water pressure on the Costa del Sol will begin to be reduced starting tonight. This action is a joint initiative by Acosol, the water company, and the Junta de Andalucia. The objective is to decrease water consumption in the Malaga province from 200 litres per person per day to 160 litres.
Gradual Reduction in Water Pressure
The reduction in water pressure will be implemented gradually from midnight until 6am in all towns that are part of the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental. This move is reminiscent of the severe drought of 1995, when locals were forced to wash in the sea due to water scarcity.
Towns Affected by the Water Pressure Reduction
The towns that will be affected by this measure include Benahavis, Benalmadena, Casares, Estepona, Fuengirola, Istan, Manilva, Marbella, Mijas, Ojen and Torremolinos. The Costa del Sol continues to be in a ‘critical’ situation due to the worst drought it has experienced in decades, as per the latest report by the ‘Drought Commission’ in the Junta’s BOJA portal.
Potential Water Shortages for Homes and Businesses
Between midnight and 6am, some homes and businesses may find themselves without water, warns Acosol. Buildings without a cistern and homes located in elevated areas far from the water source are most likely to run dry. The water pressure will be reduced every day of the week except Saturdays.
Call for Conscious Water Use
Acosol has urged residents to be mindful of their water use and to keep it as low as possible. This is a crucial step in managing the ongoing drought and ensuring that water resources are used responsibly.
