Marbella’s Job Fair and the Start of the Year
The mayor attended the Job Fair held last week in Marbella. As is customary, the year in Marbella began with job losses, which were significantly higher this year than the previous one. In January alone, nearly 4,500 jobs were lost in the municipality. However, the number of affiliations to Social Security is the highest for this month in the historical series, covering the last 22 years.
January’s Employment Situation in Marbella
January has traditionally not been a good month for employment in Marbella, marking a downturn after the Christmas season and paving the way for improvement with Easter and the subsequent summer. According to data provided by the Ministry of Social Security, there were 70,486 contributions at the end of January in Marbella, 4,476 less than in December, a decrease of 5.97%. This is a significant drop and higher than last year’s decrease of 1,746.
Annual Data Shows Slowdown in Job Creation
If we look at the annual data, there are 860 more than in the same month of 2023 and 6,802 more than in 2022, which already shows a slowdown in job creation after the acceleration post-pandemic. Even so, this is the best January in the historical series, covering the last 22 years. There has never been so much employment at the beginning of the year in Marbella.
Self-Employment in Marbella
January ended with 36 fewer self-employed individuals in Marbella, for a total of 14,319. Last September saw the historical record of self-employed workers in the municipality with 14,441. This was followed by two months of decline, which was broken in December with a small increase, to which is now added this decrease in January.

Marbella ended 2023 with almost 3,600 more jobs than the previous year. The total number of Social Security affiliates in January 2024 was 70,486, a decrease of 4,476 from December 2023. The number of self-employed individuals was 14,319, a decrease of 36 from December 2023.
