Marbella Honoured with Plaque of Merit in Golf 2023 Award
Marbella has been recognised with the Plaque of Merit in Golf 2023 award for its significant contribution to women’s golf and for successfully hosting the esteemed Solheim Cup women’s golf tournament. The tournament, which saw European and American teams compete earlier this year, was a major event in the golfing calendar.
RFEG Awards Marbella for Hosting Prestigious Golf Events
The Royal Spanish Golf Federation (RFEG) presented the award to the town hall, Acosol, and the association of municipalities of the western Costa del Sol (Mancomunidad Occidental) on Tuesday 26 December in Madrid. The RFEG expressed admiration for Marbella’s capability to organise the Race to Costa del Sol prior to the tournament and to host the distinguished Solheim Cup and the PING Junior Solheim Cup for the first time in Spain.
Multiple Entities Recognised for Their Contributions to Golf
Several entities including Marbella council, the Junta de Andalucía, Diputación de Málaga, Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Occidental-Acosol, local councils of Casares and Benahavís, Finca Cortesín, La Zagaleta, Club de Golf Son Servera, the second oldest golf club in the Balearic Islands, were also acknowledged with awards at the presentation ceremony.
Gold Medals for Merit in Golf Awarded at the Event
In addition to the main award, nine Gold Medals for Merit in Golf were presented at the event. Elías Bendodo was among the recipients for his support of the sport during his tenure as president of the Malaga’s provincial authority. The members of the Spanish teams that clinched the European Absolute Team and Individual Championships for Men and Women last summer were also honoured.
Recognition Trophies for Golfers Achieving International Triumphs in 2023
Finally, recognition trophies were given to dozens of golfers who have achieved international victories in 2023 in both amateur and professional competitions. Among the notable recipients was Carlota Ciganda, who was singled out for her exceptional performance in the Solheim Cup.
