Spanish Traffic Authority Launches Campaign to Monitor Bicycles and Scooters
The director general of the DGT (Spanish Traffic Authority) has initiated a campaign to monitor bicycles and scooters on pavements and pedestrian areas. The campaign, which started yesterday, will continue until November 7. The primary goal is to raise awareness about pedestrian mobility and emphasize that pavements are exclusively for pedestrians.
Targeting Municipalities with Over 100,000 Inhabitants
The national campaign is targeting municipalities with a population of more than 100,000. In the province of Malaga, this includes Marbella and Malaga city. The Policial Local in the targeted municipalities are supporting and collaborating on this initiative.
Objective: Reduction in Accidents on Pedestrian Zones
According to the Interior Ministry, the campaign’s objective is to effectively reduce accidents on pavements, pedestrianised streets, and promenades, which are exclusive pedestrian zones. The campaign, promoted under the slogan ‘No pasa’ and the hashtag ‘#HagamosAcera’, has been advertised on buses and urban outdoor media in Madrid, Seville, Valencia, Zaragoza and Malaga, as well as on radio spots and social networks.
Accident Rate on Urban Roads in Malaga
Official data from the DGT reveals that between January 1 and June 30 of 2021, there were 86 bicycle accidents and 35 accidents involving personal mobility vehicles (VMP) on urban roads in Malaga. Fortunately, no fatalities were recorded during this period.
Support from Various Spanish Organisations
The campaign has received support from the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), the Walking Cities Network, the Spanish Committee of Representatives of People with Disabilities (Cermi), and the Spanish Confederation of Organisations for the Elderly.
