Luxury Housing in Marbella: Water Saving Measures Eased

The Drought Committee of the Andalusian Mediterranean Basins has favorably reported this Wednesday, with no votes against, the easing of water saving measures in this territory. The new regulation, which includes the authorization to refill private pools in the Western Costa del Sol, will come into effect from June 1st.

From Severe to Serious: Water Scarcity Situation Downgraded

The committee has approved the transition from a situation of severe scarcity to serious, a step down, for the Western Costa del Sol, which includes Marbella. It has been approved to increase the water contributions for urban use in the ten municipalities of the region: Benahavís, Benalmádena, Casares, Estepona, Fuengirola, Manilva, Marbella, Ojén, Torremolinos, and Mijas, to 225 liters per inhabitant per day (+25 liters).

Private Pools in Western Costa del Sol Given Green Light

The request for authorization of private pools for the Western Costa del Sol, requested by its water operator Acosol, has been positively evaluated. The Secretary General of Water, Ramiro Angulo, pointed out the obligation for private pools to have a water recirculation system that allows the minimum necessary amount of this resource to be used to ensure the sanitary quality of the water and to replace losses that may occur due to evaporation or filter cleaning. Public and hotel pools had already been authorized by the previous Drought Management Commission of the Mediterranean Basins.

Exceptional Authorization for Increased Water Volume for Green Areas

In relation to other uses of water resources, an exceptional increase in the maximum volume of water intended for watering green areas has been authorized when there are species of special botanical interest and no regenerated or groundwater is available. Specifically, the Drought Committee has given the green light for this allocation to rise from 200 m³ to 400 m³ per hectare per month to cover survival irrigation, but establishing a maximum of one irrigation per week.

Drinking Fountains with Push Button Authorized in Western Costa del Sol and Other Areas

The authorization of drinking fountains with a push button in the Western Costa del Sol and other areas has also been agreed upon.

Showers Allowed in Sports Facilities and Pools

Finally, the requests of Acosol, Emasa, and Axaragua to allow showers in sports facilities and pools have also been favorably reported.
