Shooting Incident Outside Fuengirola Nightclub Leaves One Injured
In the early hours of Friday morning, a 34-year-old man was shot outside a nightclub in Fuengirola, sustaining a bullet wound through his left thigh. The incident took place just before 4:00 am on the Rey de España promenade, near the seafront of the Malaga town of Fuengirola. The victim was on the access stairs leading to the nightclub’s entrance when the shooting occurred.
Emergency Services Respond to Shooting
Following the incident, a witness contacted Andalucia Emergency Services. The man was conscious at the time of the call. Emergency services coordinated with local and national police, as well as medical services. The victim was transported to Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella, where he is currently recovering from non-life threatening injuries.
Investigation Underway, No Arrests Made
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The Spanish National Police have initiated an investigation into the incident. This event adds to a recent spate of firearm-related incidents on the Costa del Sol.
Recent Surge in Firearm-Related Incidents
In mid-February, police received reports of gunfire in the Marbella neighbourhood of Nueva Andalucia. However, no injuries or arrests were reported. Days prior, a Marbella man was shot in the arm and leg in what is believed to be a drug-related incident. His injuries were not serious. In October 2023, three masked gunmen shot and injured two people near the Guadalmina shopping centre in Marbella in broad daylight, before fleeing the scene by car.
Rising Crime Rates in Malaga
Crime rates in Malaga have been on the rise in recent years. In the first quarter of 2022, violent robberies saw an 81% increase compared to the previous year. Total criminal offences rose by 29% to a total of 20,207, marking an increase of 4,631 from 2021. In the first half of 2023, Malaga experienced a 7.9% increase in overall crime compared to 2022. Marbella also saw a 1.19% increase in criminal offences during the same period.
