Marbella Lighthouse Undergoes Renovation

The Mayor of Marbella, Ángeles Muñoz, announced on Friday the commencement of the renovation works of the iconic Marbella Lighthouse. The project, which has been in the pipeline for six years, is finally seeing the light of day after the tender for the works was initiated shortly before the last municipal elections. Nearly one million euros have been allocated for this project.

Integration of the Lighthouse into the Surrounding Environment

The plot of over 2,200 square meters will be integrated into the surrounding environment, connecting the promenade with Antonio Belón Avenue. The site will be equipped with municipal facilities, a sea classroom, and extensive gardens. The mayor visited the site today, where an investment of one million euros, funded by the Málaga Provincial Council, is being allocated. Specifically, the contract, worth 989,405.61 euros, was awarded in a public competition to the Seville-based company Aguas, Caminos y Puentes S.L.

Continued Operation of the Lighthouse and New Additions

The lighthouse will continue to operate, and the plot will feature a garden area of almost 1,700 square meters, with shrubs and large trees. These actions will remove the visual barrier, connect to the terraces of the Sports Port, and also allow for about 500 square meters of municipal facilities, both for the Environment Delegation and the Sea Classroom.

Long-Awaited Project Finally Comes to Fruition

The mayor reminded that the City Council has the concession of the use of the lighthouse buildings, formalized by the Málaga Port Authority. “As we do not own the property, we had to request a concession,” Muñoz pointed out.

Six Years of Promises

The file to achieve the concession of the Marbella Lighthouse was initiated in 2016 during the term of José Bernal as mayor, with Paulino Plata at the head of the Málaga Port Authority. It was done once the offers for hotel use were dismissed, within the project that the Rajoy Government then promoted throughout Spain to try to privatize these facilities.

Renovation Works Begin in 2024

After the return of the PP in 2017, six years of promises began since, in August 2018, the then Environment Councilor, Manuel Cardeña, said that after that summer the works would be tendered to allocate the Lighthouse for public use. He even assured that 400,000 euros would be invested, which were already planned in the municipal budgets. However, the facilities were not yet municipally owned and nothing could be done, except to lie, once again, to the citizens.

In the presentation of the municipal budgets for 2022, Ángeles Muñoz cited the rehabilitation of the Lighthouse as one of the objectives. In the end, the works begin in 2024 and are paid for by the Málaga Provincial Council.
