Marbella FC Seeks Direct Concession of Deteriorated Municipal Stadium
The municipal stadium of Marbella, now completely deteriorated, is in the spotlight as Marbella FC seeks its concession. The club had requested the football stadium’s concession in August 2020, following the unveiling of the “mini Bernabéu” in Puerto Banús a month earlier. At that time, the entity agreed to a public competition, which other companies could have entered. However, the club is now asking for a direct award through its foundation.
Marbella FC’s Proposal for a New Stadium
On March 14, Marbella FC submitted an application for a direct demanial concession on the municipal stadium of Marbella with the aim of building a new one. This is not the first time the club has made this move, having also attempted it in 2020 with the previous project presented in Puerto Banús. The documentation, accessed by Marbella24horas, was submitted to the City Council on August 18, 2020. It consists of the preliminary design of the stadium, commissioned by the company Best of You, which manages the club, with plans and all details.
Club’s Previous Acceptance of Public Competition
The club had previously accepted a public competition process and appealed for transparency. The application to the City Council stated, “I hereby request the initiation of procedures to grant Marbella FC SAD a concession on the Antonio Lorenzo Cuevas stadium that makes its remodeling possible.” They requested a demanial concession and proposed a public tender so that “all interested parties can submit offers according to the terms of conditions.”
Current Request for Direct Concession
Now, however, the entity has made a request, through its foundation, for a direct demanial concession, without a public competition. They demand a direct award through a non-profit organization, even though the project still includes a hotel and commercial spaces. The urban fit was made possible with the modification of the urban regulations that recently came into effect.
Future of the 2020 and 2024 Projects
The 2020 project never progressed, and it remains to be seen what happens with the 2024 project. Related news: In 2021, the mayor of Marbella announced a public stadium of 15 million.
