Major Water Supply Company Acosol to Repair Key Sewerage Network in Marbella and Estepona
Acosol, one of the leading public water supply companies on the Costa del Sol, has announced plans to repair two critical sections of the sewerage network in Marbella and Estepona. The initiative aims to alleviate issues at their treatment plants. The project, which will cost nearly four million euros, will be funded by the provincial authority. The repair work will focus on more than 2.4 kilometres of the network, which is one of the most weather-damaged sections due to storms.
Project Details and Expected Outcomes
Acosol has already initiated the contracting process for the project, which will ensure the comprehensive repair of the main sewer in the affected areas. The repair work will involve the installation of a fibreglass sleeve as an inner lining. This action is designed to provide structural safety to the general sewerage collector in the sections most affected by corrosion. It will also make the pipe watertight, preventing seawater seepage which increases the conductivity of the water entering the Guadalmansa (Estepona) and Víbora (Marbella) treatment plants.
Two Specific Actions to be Carried Out
The project will consist of two specific actions. One will take place in Estepona, focusing on 1,944 linear metres and 90cm in diameter. The other will occur in Marbella, covering 507 metres and 110cm in diameter. The goal is to repair both sections that have been most affected by corrosion, thereby preventing the water in the network from reaching the treatment plants with increased salinity.
Benefits of the Project
According to Acosol, the project will benefit both the plant’s energy needs and the quality of the recycled water that is subsequently supplied for irrigation of golf courses on the Western Costa del Sol.
Continued Infrastructure Improvement
In addition to this project, Acosol aims to continue improving the infrastructure. The company highlighted a recently approved investment plan in the plenary session of the association of municipalities of the western Costa del Sol. The plan allocates 348.6 million euros for facility improvements. Of this amount, 232 million euros will be used for the integral sewerage system of the western Costa del Sol, including the infrastructures related to the collectors located on the coast, treatment plants and regenerated water networks.
Allocation for Rehabilitation and Replacement
In this section, along with the two sections of the sewerage network in Marbella and Estepona, there is an allocation of 30 million euros for the rehabilitation and replacement of integral sewerage networks with serious structural damage. This will reduce the risk of potential discharges into the environment. Additionally, up to 46 million euros will be used for improvements to process lines and installations in treatment plants to adapt them to regulatory changes.
