Andalucía Team Shines at LX Spanish Mathematical Olympiad

The young team representing the Andalucía region at the LX Spanish Mathematical Olympiad, held on 15th and 16th March, brought home a total of eight medals. Among the winners was Maxim Dudik, a Russian native residing in Marbella, who clinched the gold medal, securing his spot at the international competition scheduled for July in Bath, UK.

Marbella Celebrates Maxim’s Victory

Maxim’s victory was celebrated at the German School in Marbella on 18th March, where he proudly displayed his gold medal. The young mathematician expressed his surprise and immense joy at winning, stating that he did not expect to clinch the gold. Maxim’s love for mathematics began at a young age in Moscow, where he engaged in mathematical games. However, his passion for the subject truly blossomed in Marbella, where he has resided with his family for nearly four years.

Maxim’s Journey to Gold

In addition to his regular school lessons, Maxim attends the Mathematical Ingenuity Workshop at the University of Malaga (UMA), conducted by Professor Cristina Draper. Maxim dedicates two to three hours a week at the UMA workshop and also receives guidance from a private tutor. Reflecting on the Olympiad, Maxim shared that he found the problems on the first day easily solvable, and managed to solve one of the three problems on the second day within 15 minutes. Ultimately, he successfully solved half of the six problems presented.

Maxim to Represent Spain at International Mathematics Olympiad

Maxim will be among the six young men representing Spain at the 65th International Mathematics Olympiad, which has been relocated to Bath, UK, from Ukraine due to the ongoing conflict. Maxim expressed his honour and happiness at representing Spain, a country he has grown to love and consider home.

Maxim’s Future Plans

Having resided in Marbella for nearly four years, Maxim is already contemplating his future at university. Despite his mathematical prowess, Maxim is considering studying computer science, with the University of Malaga and universities in Germany among his potential choices. He recently participated in the Spanish Computer Olympiad in Seville, where he placed 17th out of 40 participants.

Andalucía’s Success at the Olympiad

The Andalusian team, comprising 12 young individuals, including Maxim Dudik and Bruno Castro Conde, won a total of eight medals at the national competition. The medals included one gold, three silver, and four bronze. The LX Spanish Mathematical Olympiad is a competition for Baccalaureate students enrolled in Spanish schools or approved foreign schools in Spain during the current academic year 2023/24.
