Malaga Medical Union Accuses Andalusian Government of Discrimination
The Malaga Medical Union (SMM) has accused the Andalusian government of discriminating against some doctors working at the Costa del Sol University Hospital in Marbella. The union claims that these doctors are paid less than others, receiving six euros less per hour due to contract differences unrelated to their work.
Continued Degradation of Public Health in Marbella
The public health sector in Marbella, and the Costa del Sol region in general, continues to deteriorate. This Thursday, the union made another public complaint on behalf of the workers.
Health and Families Council Accused of Discrimination
According to a statement released by the union, the Health and Families Council is discriminating against a group of doctors who are on call, paying them six euros less per hour due to contract differences unrelated to their work. The union explains that the Costa del Sol University Hospital “keeps workers under labor regime” despite its transition to the statutory network of the Andalusian Health Service, a public entity of the council.
Contracted Doctors Paid Less for On-Call Hours
These contracted doctors are paid six euros less per on-call hour, the union details. In some cases, due to the high demand for on-call services, this can result in a salary difference of up to 1,000 euros less. On the other hand, “several service heads at this hospital who are still under labor contracts earn more than a minister of the Spanish Government, not including incentives, professional career, trienniums, and other salary increases.”
Union Calls Out “Outrageous” Salary Discrimination
The union finds it “outrageous” that a base doctor is discriminated against in such a “blatant” way in terms of salary for doing the same job, while the council “squanders public money on astronomical salaries for a few.” The union criticizes the Health Council of the Andalusian government for boasting about equal pay for men and women, but in reality, nothing is done about it, especially not at the Costa del Sol Hospital.
Union Demands Equal Pay for On-Call Hours
The union demands that on-call hours be paid equally in public hospitals in this autonomous community, which, on the other hand, is one of the ones that pays its doctors the least for on-call and daily work. Therefore, the SMM does not accept these forms of “labor abuse” exercised by the Administration that impact not only the doctor’s salary but also their professional health.
