Spanish Group of Photobiology Holds 38th Meeting at Costa del Sol University Hospital
The Spanish Group of Photobiology (GEF), part of the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (AEDV), has kicked off its 38th meeting this Friday at the Costa del Sol University Hospital (HUCS). The event, which will take place today and tomorrow, has gathered 120 individuals from various generations and diverse scientific fields.
Exploring the Impact of Light on Health
Photobiology, the branch of science that studies everything related to light and its effect on the health of living beings, is the main focus of the meeting. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies ultraviolet radiation, emitted by the sun or artificial sources, as a type I human carcinogen, a substance, organism, or agent capable of causing cancer.
Opening Ceremony Attended by Health Officials
The opening ceremony, held today in the auditorium of the Costa del Sol University Hospital, was attended by the regional delegate of Health and Consumption, Carlos Bautista; the medical deputy director of HUCS, Adolfo Galán; and the president of the AEDV, Yolanda Gilaberte, among others.
GEF’s Multidisciplinary Approach to Photobiology
The GEF has a multidisciplinary character and aims to provide valuable knowledge to the scientific community, the dermatological community, and the general population. Therefore, its meetings present research results related to UV radiation exposure in fields ranging from early childhood education to occupational risks related to photoexposure, as well as updates in phototherapy and photodynamics.
Increasing Clinical Cases Related to UV Overexposure
The president of the AEDV highlighted the great importance of the GEF, as “in consultations we are encountering more and more clinical cases related to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation”. The GEF coordinator thanked for the recognition, adding that “this year we have a very interesting program that will provide us all with new knowledge in photobiology”.
Wide Range of Scientific Topics Covered
The program includes presentations from a wide range of scientific fields. It features descriptions of phototherapy treatments carried out in patients with psoriasis or vitiligo, among others, and lectures on the use of different wavelengths of light in the treatment of clinical conditions. It also invites discussion in its assemblies and includes a round table on personalized and medicalized photoprotection.
Preventing Photoinduced Diseases like Skin Cancer
During this event, the results of several interventions and research on the prevention of photoinduced diseases such as skin cancer will also be known. The hospital manager expressed that “holding the meeting at the hospital facilities is a great recognition, considering that our Dermatology service is a leader in Andalusia in the prevention of diseases related to overexposure to UV radiation, through the Soludable Project”.
Spanish Group of Photobiology Meeting: An Exceptional Event
The meeting of the Spanish Group of Photobiology is an exceptional event to learn about the latest in the treatment of skin diseases. Therefore, this year the organizers have made available a ‘Phototherapy Course’, held this morning prior to the meeting, which consisted of an online theoretical module and a practical face-to-face module.
Training Offers Opportunity for New Knowledge
As highlighted by Magdalena de Troya, “these types of trainings offer the opportunity to acquire new knowledge; innovation is essential to improve the service offered in dermatology consultations”. The organizing team would like to express its gratitude to all the people, institutions, and companies, collaborators and sponsors, for their contribution to this event.
