Marbella Prepares for a New Holy Week with the Introduction of a New Brotherhood

Last year’s Parish Group of Amargura has now become a new brotherhood. Marbella is gearing up to experience a new Holy Week at the end of March. This year brings with it some exciting new developments, one of the most significant being the debut of a new brotherhood, that of Our Lady of Amargura.

Return of San Juan Evangelista and the Recovery of Christ of the Cane

San Juan Evangelista will once again play a prominent role on Resurrection Sunday, and the recovery of the Christ of the Cane has been announced. A press conference was held this morning at the City Hall to present the Holy Week 2024 program in Marbella.

Processions to Start on Passion Saturday

Among the updates, it was mentioned that the processions will start on Passion Saturday, a tradition that has been followed for years. The new development this year is that the parade is being organized by the new Brotherhood of Our Lady of Amargura, formerly a Parish Group and before that a Youth Association.

From “Children of Leganitos” to the Eighth Brotherhood of Marbella

The “Children of Leganitos” have grown up and have become the eighth brotherhood of Marbella, the first since 1981, when the Calvary was founded, which processed in 1982. Therefore, it has been 42 years since the city incorporated a new brotherhood.

Revival of San Juan Evangelista and the Recovery of Christ of the Cane

The parish priest of the Incarnation, José Antonio Sánchez, emphasized the “central role that San Juan Evangelista has regained, who, along with the Risen Christ and the Virgin of Victory, is once again the main protagonist of Resurrection Sunday”. He also announced that “the heritage of Holy Week will be enriched with the recovery of the Christ of the Cane”. This is an image that was lost during the Civil War, he said, and has now been commissioned to a sculptor so that it can return to the streets of Marbella “in a couple of years”.

Holy Week Dates for 2024

Holy Week this year will take place from March 23 to March 31.
