Tragic Jet Ski Accident Claims Life of Seven-Year-Old Boy in Marbella
A seven-year-old boy tragically lost his life in a jet ski accident off a beach in Marbella. The incident occurred at around 7.30pm on Thursday, 1 August in the Pinillo area. The boy was vacationing with his family, who had decided to spend the day at the beach, enjoying rides on a jet ski owned by friends.
Details of the Accident
The accident happened when the jet ski, carrying the boy and an adult, approached the shore. It passed an area of the coast known for wave formation, possibly due to a sandbank or the seabed’s topography. The jet ski flipped on its side at this point, and the waves threw its two occupants into the water. The watercraft reportedly overturned on top of the pair in a shallow area.
Witness Accounts and Immediate Response
According to initial witness statements, the child was on the jet ski with an adult who was piloting the boat. This information is yet to be confirmed by the ongoing investigation. Darío Pereira, who manages The Point yacht club on Pinillo beach, was about 100 meters from the location when the incident happened. He and his team rushed to the scene, finding the child unconscious on the sand. Despite their attempts to revive him, the boy remained unresponsive and was quickly transported to the hospital.
Medical Intervention and Confirmation of Death
The manager of the business, along with the boy’s father and another individual, rushed the child to the Hospital Costa del Sol. The boy was admitted in cardiorespiratory arrest, and his death was later confirmed in the emergency department.
Background Information on the Family and the Jet Ski
The family, who are foreigners, had arrived at the resort two days prior for a holiday. The boy was wearing a life jacket at the time of the accident, and the jet ski he was riding was privately owned. It had been launched that afternoon, around 3pm, from The Point slipway.
Previous Fatal Accidents Involving Jet Skis
This incident marks the third fatal accident involving jet skis along the Malaga province coastline in just over a year. The first of these occurred on Sunday, 16 July last year, when a 32-year-old woman died after falling from a watercraft. A few weeks later, on 9 August 2023, a 32-year-old French man also lost his life in a jet ski accident in Fuengirola.
Other Fatal Jet Ski Accidents in Spain
This is not the only fatal jet ski accident this year on Spain’s coasts. On 20 April, a beach day ended in tragedy in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, when a 28-year-old woman lost control of her watercraft and crashed into the rocks of a breakwater. Despite the efforts of medical staff, they were unable to save the young woman’s life.
