Local Police Officers in Marbella Save Choking Toddler
Two local police officers in Marbella have saved the life of a two-year-old girl who was choking on a pistachio and was unable to breathe, according to a statement released by the City Council on Friday. The mother sought their help upon seeing them while she was on her way to the hospital.
Incident Occurred During Routine Patrol
The incident took place while the unit was patrolling Playas del Duque Avenue in Puerto Banús. They noticed a vehicle driving with its emergency lights on and, upon seeing the police officers, it stopped. A woman rushed out of the car with a child in her arms, approaching the officers for help and shouting that her daughter was choking and couldn’t breathe.
Quick Response from Police Officers
The officers then noticed that the little girl, who has Down syndrome, had a bluish face and was bleeding and salivating from her mouth. Her mother told them that she believed her daughter had choked on a pistachio. In the emergency situation, her parents, of Arab origin, were heading to the hospital but had stopped to ask for help upon seeing the local security unit.
Life-Saving Measures
One of the officers called the Police Headquarters to request an urgent ambulance, while his partner inserted a finger into the girl’s mouth and managed to remove the obstruction that was blocking her breathing. He also positioned the child face down and gave her back blows to help expel the obstruction. The maneuvers were successful and the little girl regained her normal color and began to breathe without apparent difficulty.
Medical Attention and Recovery
Once the 061 medical team arrived at the scene, the girl was taken by ambulance to the Costa del Sol University Hospital for examination and necessary care. After all this, the child was discharged without further complications.
