Marbella Hospital Incident: Mother Attacks Nurses Over Breakfast Dispute
In a shocking incident at a Marbella hospital, a mother launched a violent tirade against two nurses. The incident occurred in the pediatric ward of the Costa del Sol Hospital on Tuesday, December 14. The mother of a young patient reportedly assaulted the nurses over a disagreement about the breakfast served at the hospital.
Details of the Attack
The mother, who was visibly upset, allegedly unleashed a barrage of verbal abuse at the hospital staff, even threatening to kill them. The issue first came to light when the mother expressed dissatisfaction with the complimentary breakfast provided to family members at the hospital.
Escalation of the Situation
Alberto Ortega, a representative of the SATSE Nursing Union, revealed that the situation escalated when the mother requested the hospital staff to take her daughter to the cafeteria. When the nurses declined, the woman started yelling. Ortega explained that the woman complained about the quality of the coffee and bread, despite these issues being unrelated to the nurses’ duties.
Response to the Attack
The hospital’s security team was promptly alerted about the violent outburst, and the National Police were summoned to the scene. Union officials have strongly condemned the attack, expressing concern about the increasing violence and aggression towards nurses, which they say is having a detrimental impact on staff wellbeing.
Union’s Stance on Staff Safety
Ortega emphasized that staff safety is a priority and that the union has a strict zero-tolerance policy towards violence and aggression against nurses. He stated that nurses have the right to work without threats, assaults, and intimidation, and assured that legal support is provided in cases where a staff member has been assaulted.
Understaffing and Violence in Hospitals
Ortega criticized the hospital management, attributing the rise in violence during the pandemic to understaffed wards. He claimed that the failure to renew hundreds of nurses’ contracts has resulted in insufficient personnel to cover shifts during the Christmas holidays. He also noted that the pressure on hospital staff has increased significantly during the coronavirus outbreak, leading to more instances of violence against nurses.
Emergency Meeting Following the Attacks
In response to the incident, the Costa del Sol Health Agency convened an emergency meeting. The agency, which represents the Costa del Sol Hospital and other hospitals in Benalmadena, Mijas, and Estepona, expressed its strong condemnation of all forms of aggression, whether physical or verbal, against professionals at their centers.
