Senate Refuses to Send Full Investigation File on Angeles Muñoz to Marbella Court
The People’s Party (PP) has used its majority in the Senate Bureau to prevent the full file of information gathered in 2023 by the Incompatibilities Commission on the assets of Angeles Muñoz, the mayor of Marbella and then senator, from being sent to a Marbella court. Only documentation considered public has been agreed to be sent. The origins of the mayor’s wealth, which she has never been able to credibly justify, are once again in the spotlight and continue to be surrounded by controversy and obscurity.
Senate Bureau’s Decision on Angeles Muñoz’s Investigation
On this occasion, the Senate Bureau decided last Tuesday not to send the complete documentation of the investigation carried out by the Incompatibilities Commission on Angeles Muñoz to a Marbella court. The news was first reported by the digital media outlet Infolibre, which pointed out that the PP has withheld some of the information due to its “secret nature”.
Request from Marbella Court
According to this information, the request to the Senate came from the Marbella Court of Instruction number 4 and is related to a procedure initiated by the mayor herself for the right to honor. The Upper House was asked to send the “testimony” of the work carried out in 2023 by the Incompatibilities Commission on the concealment of assets by Muñoz in her declaration of assets. The request arrived on February 29 and was addressed yesterday by the Senate Bureau, which, with the majority of the PP, agreed to partially send the required documentation. Only information considered public, such as the declaration of activities and assets and the opinion, will be transferred.
Secret Work of the Commission
However, the commission’s own work carried out during the processing of the file and the documents made available for that investigation are considered secret. Therefore, another chapter of obscurity about the assets of Angeles Muñoz, which are estimated to have a market value of around 15 million euros.
Unjustified Wealth of Angeles Muñoz
In November 2022, she stated that she had amassed this fortune with her savings during the time she was a family doctor. In December, the PSOE requested a parliamentary investigation after it had been confirmed by journalistic information that the then senator had concealed assets from the Upper House.
Investigation on Angeles Muñoz
The work in the Incompatibilities Commission began in February 2023 to clarify whether Muñoz had committed a serious breach of the Code of Conduct. In May, she was given a hearing to testify about the investigation, but she did not attend. A few days later, with the call for general elections, the chambers were dissolved and the matter did not have an opinion. In June, it was revealed that the mayor would not repeat as a senator as she was not included in the PP list for Malaga.
Concealment of Assets by Angeles Muñoz
Angeles Muñoz concealed more than four million euros in assets in her declaration of assets to the Senate, based on a market price valuation. After being discovered by the media, she updated part of the information in the Upper House, but without including a company she owns in Sweden. She acknowledged an increase in assets that originated from a donation from her husband, who was being investigated for drug money laundering.
Investigation on Angeles Muñoz’s Husband
The company in Sweden was finally included, after the municipal elections in May 2023, in her declaration of assets to the City Council. The Anti-Drug Prosecutor’s Office concluded last October that the mayor’s husband had been involved in money laundering operations for more than six million euros. He was not charged in the Swedish scheme as he had died in March 2023.
