Second Marpoética Poetry Prize Announced in Marbella

The Marbella City Council has launched the call for the second International Marpoética Poetry Prize. The award, which comes with a prize money of 20,000 euros, aims to become a national benchmark. Last year, the winner was Felipe Benítez Reyes from Cadiz, who was chosen from over 1,800 entries, many of which came from Latin America.

Marbella’s Cultural Director Shares Details of the Award

Carmen Díaz, the General Director of Culture in Marbella, announced the details of the award this morning. The award was created last year and was a “success” that she hopes will be repeated. The submission period for the second International Marpoética Poetry Prize opened on January 17, 2024, and will continue for three months until April 17.

Prize Money and Publication Opportunity for the Winner

The prize money remains the same as last year, 20,000 euros, and the winning work will be published by the Madrid-based Visor Publishing House. Díaz pointed out that this is the “second most important of the international poetry prizes in Spanish”.

Jury Members and Submission Guidelines

The jury will be chaired by Asturian writer Olvido García Valdés and will include Julieta Valero, Antonio Lucas, Javier Vicedo, and Carmen Díaz herself. The entries must have a minimum of 300 verses, with free theme and meter. Last year, more than 1,800 works were submitted, many of which came from Latin America.

Last Year’s Winner and the Marpoética Festival

The winner was Felipe Benítez Reyes from Cadiz with his poetry collection “The Dawn Files”. This prize is part of the Marpoética Festival, an event that is now in its seventh edition and will receive 120,000 euros from the Marbella City Council this year.
