Queen Sofia of Spain Opts for a Casual Night Out in Marbella

The former queen of Spain, Queen Sofia, chose to forego the usual pomp and circumstance associated with royalty during her recent visit to Marbella. Instead of dining at one of the four Michelin-starred restaurants or grand dining rooms of the numerous five-star hotels in the Costa del Sol, she opted for a more relaxed setting.

Queen Sofia Dines at Expat-Owned Indian Restaurant

Queen Sofia chose to dine at Mumtaz, an Indian restaurant in Puerto Banus, owned by an expat. The Olive Press reports that the Queen, along with her friends including Princess Alia of Jordan and her sister Irene of Greece, visited the restaurant after attending a recital by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra and Choir at the Marbella Arena.

Queen Sofia Joined by Renowned Musicians

The royal group was joined by Indian conductor Zubin Mehta, who recommended the restaurant, and legendary pianist/conductor Daniel Barenboim. Queen Sofia, a known music lover, had travelled to Marbella to enjoy the open-air concert of her friend Mehta, who is often described as the world’s best conductor.

Details of the Royal Dinner

Mumtaz manager Juan Gimenez revealed that the Royal group arrived at 11:30 pm, minutes after the recital finished. The dinner was hosted by billionaire philanthropists Yusuf and Farida Hamied, and the restaurant was closed to the public for the occasion. Interestingly, while the Queen seemed to enjoy the evening, she only tried a few dishes and none with meat.

Queen Sofia’s Choice of Wine

Despite her limited food choices, Queen Sofia did enjoy a few glasses of Vega Sicilia’s famous Valbuena wine, one of Spain’s top wines costing upwards of €135 a bottle. “It is one of the best and most expensive wines that we offer in our restaurant,” said Juan Gimenez.

Queen Sofia’s Interaction with the Staff

Queen Sofia, 83, was reportedly very friendly with the staff and even posed for a few pictures with them. “She was having an amazing time, smiling a lot and speaking with all of her friends and with her sister,” added the manager.

Security Measures for the Royal Visit

The restaurant was booked only two days in advance and the entrance was secured by police officers to protect the former Queen. This was her last trip before travelling to Mallorca with King Felipe and Leticia, where she will spend the rest of the summer.

About the Restaurant

Mumtaz is part of the Metro Group run by successful British-Indian expat businessman Mr Ram. The group also owns Jacks, Joys and the recently-opened Leone in the Port, as well as Alberts in Cabopino.
