Romanian 800-metre runner Oprea Theodor Andrei moved to Marbella on 1 September, choosing the city for its climate and athletics infrastructure. He now trains with Club Atletismo Marbella del Sol.
A new home built around athletics
“I chose this city for the climate and the infrastructure that is favourable for performance in athletics,” Oprea says. The decision was made after he saw Marbella’s municipal athletics track, which “won me over instantly”. The decisive moment came when he contacted coach Oscar Iranzo Jaime and began working with him.
From his first training session, Oprea says he felt welcomed and respected by both his teammates and the club’s management. Being close to the athletics facilities was his main priority, and he is now near both the indoor short-track facility and the outdoor stadium under construction.
Settling in with Real Marbella Estate
Oprea rented his Marbella home with Real Marbella Estate. “The move went very quickly and easily, with the help of the real-estate agent. The documents were signed by all three parties, my things arrived within a few days, and the owners were involved in making my settling in easier and simpler,” he says.
He trains every day during the week and on Saturdays. Sundays are reserved for church, rest and recovery on the beach. His favourite places include the athletics stadium, Bounty Beach restaurant—where he appreciates the welcoming Romanian community—and Marbella’s beaches.
“I want to stay here throughout my sporting career”
Oprea hopes to remain in Marbella throughout his sporting career and progress as far as possible alongside Club Atletismo Marbella del Sol. He has been pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food, although he misses traditional Romanian dishes.
His advice to Romanians considering a move is direct: “Do it as soon as possible.” He describes Marbella as “a warm and welcoming city where you feel the emphasis is on quality of life, where you see people smiling in the street most of the time.”
