The iconic Hotel Don Carlos in Marbella is set to undergo a complete refurbishment, thanks to a grant from Spain’s central government. The project, which is expected to create 20 new jobs, has been allocated nearly 1.3 million euros in funding.
Modernisation and Sustainability at the Forefront
The refurbishment, which is budgeted at 9.8 million euros, aims to modernise and enhance the sustainability of the hotel’s facilities. Since its opening in 1969, the hotel has become a popular meeting point for Marbella’s elite and has hosted numerous Spanish and international celebrities. The hotel has also adhered to the hotel modernisation decree launched by the Junta de Andalucía.
Refurbishment to Include Larger Communal Areas and Climate Control Systems
The refurbishment plans include the expansion of communal areas and the addition of rooms with terraces for guests to enjoy the local climate. The hotel will also extend its solar protection and passive climate control systems, and take necessary measures to reduce its carbon footprint. Other changes include the creation of pergolas throughout the site and the refurbishment of the main entrance and restaurant.

The History of an Icon
Marbella is home to a range of iconic establishments that have attracted the jet-set over the decades, and the Hotel Don Carlos is one of them. The hotel, which opened as the only Hilton hotel in Spain 56 years ago, was later renamed the Don Carlos. Its architecture, designed by Alberto López Palanco and José María Santos Rein, has been lauded by experts. The facilities were considered state-of-the-art at the time, with one of the architects working in New York to infuse the American feel that the company desired.
