Luis Ángel Maté Takes the Lead in Today’s Volta Race

Marbella-born Luis Ángel Maté was the star of the show in today’s fourth stage of the Volta a Cataluña, making a daring breakaway in the final stretch in an attempt to surprise the peloton. He managed to ride solo for about 15 kilometers, with the group close behind. At the end of the day, the Euskaltel-Euskadi cyclist expressed his disappointment at the lack of support from other riders.

Maté’s Last Volta

Maté is currently competing in what will be his last Volta, one of the most significant races in the national scene with over a hundred years of history. This is the eleventh time he has participated in this race during his professional career. It is, therefore, one of his favorite competitions, and he made his presence felt during the fourth stage this Thursday.

A Surprise Attack

With about 27 kilometers left to the finish line, Maté attempted to surprise the peloton with a powerful attack. However, no one else joined him in his venture, and he had to bear the brunt of the effort alone. He led the race for about 15 kilometers before being caught with 12 kilometers left to the finish line.

Challenging Conditions

“There was a strong headwind, and ideally, we should have had at least three riders, but it was impossible,” he said at the end of the day to Teledeporte. “The teams that control the race take us where they want, and we have to try to do things,” he added.

Fourth Stage of the Volta

The fourth stage of the Volta was contested between Sort and Lérida, covering 160 kilometers of flat terrain, although with a second category climb. Dutchman Van den Berg won the mass arrival, while Pogacar remains the overall leader.

Post-Race Interview

In a post-race interview with Teledeporte, Maté shared his wisdom and advice, particularly for young people.
