Specsavers Ópticas Joins Global Campaign for World Optometry Day
Specsavers Ópticas in Spain is participating in a unique initiative to celebrate optometrists worldwide and their significant contributions to eye health. The campaign is in observance of World Optometry Day, which falls on Saturday, 23 March. The optical retail chain will collaborate with the World Council of Optometry’s (WCO) campaign, aimed at raising awareness about eye health both nationally and internationally.
Carlos Partal: A Dedicated Optometrist at Specsavers Ópticas
Carlos Partal, a graduate in optics and optometry with a master’s degree in clinical optometry, has been serving at Specsavers Ópticas in Marbella for 12 years. He believes that optometry is a noble profession as it allows him to assist customers in various ways. His daily tasks include conducting comprehensive eye tests, diagnosing eye conditions, prescribing glasses or contact lenses, and providing advice on maintaining eye health.
Identifying and Treating Eye Conditions
Partal regularly encounters cases of high ocular pressure, which can lead to glaucoma if not treated promptly. He also detects signs of other conditions such as retinal detachments or age-related macular degeneration during eye tests. Timely intervention in these cases can significantly impact the outcome. Once an issue is identified, the clinic refers patients to an ophthalmologist for diagnosis and immediate treatment.
World Optometry Day: A Call for Regular Eye Examinations
On World Optometry Day, Partal emphasizes the importance of regular eye examinations, protecting eyes from the sun with high UV protection sunglasses, and leading a healthy lifestyle. He suggests a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, and regular exercise as the best ways to maintain good eye health.
Managing Diabetes for Eye Health
Partal also stresses the importance of managing diabetes, as uncontrolled diabetes can lead to diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can cause irreversible vision loss. He advises that controlling blood sugar levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels are crucial to avoid vision problems.
Partal’s Commitment to a Healthy Lifestyle and Charity
Partal, a sports enthusiast, particularly enjoys water sports. He is also dedicated to supporting charities, including the Josep Carreras foundation, which conducts research into curing leukaemia. He is also helping Specsavers Ópticas reach their goal of raising 5,000 euros for DiabetesCERO in 2024.
Running for a Cause: The Estepona Half Marathon
Partal is currently training to participate in the Estepona Half Marathon on 5 May to raise funds for DiabetesCERO, which supports research into curing Type 1 diabetes. He will be running over 21km, from Cancelada to the Estepona seafront promenade, ending at the Estepona athletics stadium. His fundraising goal is 500 euros, and donations can be made at Specsavers Ópticas in Marbella or via GoFundMe.
